This year, the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Laguna Seca celebrated its 35th anniversary. Held from August 15-17, this sunny historic race meeting at the curvaceous Laguna circuit is a highlight in the busy racing season. Event Chairman said, '35 years ago, 60 cars took part in the first races here at Laguna Seca. It was an experiment and simple idea that had never been tried before. The idea was the easy part. Making it happen for all these years has been tougher but great fun.' This year, Mario Andretti was the racing legend celebrated at the Historics – it's the 30th anniversary of his Formula 1 World Championship; as well as the 50th anniversary of Formula Junior, the original driver development series for road racing. An interesting return is the popular Toyota Race of Legends where current F1 team driver Timo Glock was pitted against some past masters including Derek Bell, Alan Jones, Patrick Tambay and Johnny Herbert. After eight tightly fought laps, where each driver was racing an identical Toyota Scion sports coupe, the F1 driver crossed the line first. Other racing included heavy metal Trans-Am, Can-Am, Indy racers and Historic Formula 1 cars as well as a fine field of pre-war and ever popular production sports racers in action at this entertaining motor racing circuit. After 35 years, the Monterey Historic Automobile Races are more popular than ever.
