New record at RM Maranello

Auction house RM broke the record for the most valuable car ever to sell at auction at its Legenda e Passione sale in Maranello, Italy, this weekend (May 17-18).

Auction house RM broke the record for the most valuable car ever to sell at auction at its Legenda e Passione sale in Maranello, Italy, this weekend (May 17-18).

The car in question, a
1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, was the headliner of the sale and sold to the UK broadcaster and BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans for an astounding €7,040,000 – over £5.6million.

Pound for pound, this is the highest price ever paid for any car at auction, topping the previous record holder – a Bugatti Type 41 sold by Christies in 1987 – by over £100,000, though at the time of this sale the dollar was much stronger and the euro did not exist, so all values are relative.

This may be the highest price to be paid for a car at auction but it is not necessarily the most valuable car or even Ferrari. 250 GTOs are known to have commanded in excess of $10 million privately and there are even rumours of a recent private Ferrari sale of around $23 million.
