Updated 992.2 Porsche 911 GT3 breaks cover

Updating the Porsche 911 GT3 has always been a delicate balance of making improvements without disrupting the core essence of the road-racer, and that’s exactly what the 992.2-generation model hopes to achieve. 25 years on from the launch of the first 996-generation GT3, the new car promises a wider scope of usability – with new Weissach and Leichtbau packages.

Despite being subject to ever increasing emissions regulations, the naturally-aspirated 503bhp, 9000rpm flat-six remains. To keep power at the same level, the previous RS’s spikier cams were required, as well as a redesigned cylinder head and flow optimised individual throttle bodies. Both PDK and manual options remain.

As before, the GT3 is offered in both standard and Touring guises and Porsche has chosen to further differentiate the two models. On the surface, the Touring forgoes the prominent rear wing, with the standard GT3 featuring the signature swan-neck rear wing, an improved front splitter, and rear diffuser – all of which help to deliver exceptional downforce and high-speed stability. For the first time, the Touring will be available with a rear seat option – with ISOFIX so you can even take you kids out just as with the more regular 911 models.

Much of what has been updated comes directly from lessons learnt from the successful S/T model. This includes revised (marginally softer) suspension settings, a new steering rack as well as a shorter final drive to improve acceleration – and more frequent enjoyment of the glorious 9000rpm redline. Some of the car’s upgrades come directly from the previous-generation RS too, such as the improved cooling and anti-dive front suspension.

Both regular GT3 and Touring are available with the Weissach package, which offers a whole host of CFRP parts, including the anti-roll bars, coupling rods, the roof, side plates of the rear wing, exterior mirror top shell, and many other parts. Additional leather and Race-Tex upholstery enhance the look of the interior, with a roll cage and magnesium lightweight forged wheels are available as options.

The Leichtbau, or ‘Lightwight’ package is available exclusively on the Touring. Here, the roof and many of the same components as the Weissach package are fitted, but the lightweight magnesium forged wheels and the lightweight door panels are also part of the pack. In conjunction with the standard six-speed manual gearbox, the shortened gear lever from the 911 S/T is used.

For people who plan on serious track work with the GT3 Wing car, there is a Clubsport package available for no extra cost – which adds a bolted steel rear roll cage, a six-point harness and fire extinguisher. Although a free option, it does require the optional lightweight sports seats to be fitted…

‘The new 911 GT3 has become even more exhilarating and individual. We dug into a wealth of details and gave it many features that our customers wanted. This allows the GT3 to be adapted even more specifically to the purpose or preferences of the driver,’ says Andreas Preuninger, Head of GT Cars.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 and the new Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring package can be ordered from the end of the year at a price of £157,300.00 RRP including VAT. The Weissach package for the GT3 (inc rollcage) is priced from £19,530.00 RRP, without roll cage £15,597.00 RRP. The Leichtbau package for the GT3 with Touring package is priced from £29,225.00 RRP; this option package includes magnesium wheels on the Touring, which are otherwise £13,760.00 RRP for the winged GT3.

Exclusive chronograph

Exclusively for owners of the 911 GT3 and the 911 GT3 Touring, Porsche Design presents an accompanying chronograph. Priced at £10,250.00, the 911 GT3 chronograph and the 911 GT3 Touring chronograph are equipped with the precise, COSC-certified Porsche Design WERK 01.200 movement, which has a flyback function. The ultra-lightweight titanium case, optionally with black titanium carbide coating, combines sports car design with modern watchmaking.

The GT3 design dial with yellow accents and hexagonal structure evokes the vehicle’s instrument panel, while the winding rotor is based on the design of the GT3 rims. The dial ring is available in all exterior colours of the 911 GT3 and the Touring package, as well as in the colours of the Paint to Sample programme. The band, crafted using original Porsche interior leather and thread, is also matched to the respective configuration of the vehicle.
