Bugatti restores Veyron Super Sport that set production car top speed record

Bugatti‘s La Maison Pur Sang heritage department has restored the Veyron Super Sport that reached 267mph at Germany’s Ehra-Lessein test track in 2010 to set the production car top speed record. The record was set by Bugatti test driver Pierre-Henri Raphanel just hours after James May recorded a 259mph run for an episode of Top Gear.

The car was built as a pre-series development vehicle used during the global Veyron Super Sport launch and has covered more than 44,000 miles during its lifetime. It returned to Bugatti’s Molsheim headquarters in 2025, beginning a six-month restoration process that returned it to factory specification.

‘Bugatti hyper sports cars are engineered to be driven, experienced and enjoyed,’ said Bugatti heritage and certification expert Luigi Galli. ‘Through La Maison Pur Sang we ensure that even vehicles with a rich and active history can be restored to the same standard they possessed when they first left Molsheim.’

Beyond its record-breaking feats, the car was also used for customer demonstrations and media activities, while acting as a platform to develop and refine the systems and technologies used in the production Veyron Super Sport.

Externally, the exposed carbonfibre bodywork has been refinished with a new clear coat. The contrasting orange paintwork has also been carefully renewed. Inside, the seats and leather trim have been rejuvenated, and the steering wheel fully serviced and detailed.

The 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission remain original, although some pre-series components – including select electronics and radiator systems – have been upgraded with production-spec parts for improved reliability.

With the restoration complete, the Veyron Super Sport World Record Edition will join a privately owned Bugatti collection.
