Chris Rea’s Dino 308 heads to Iconic Auctioneers’ NEC Classic Motor Show auction

Iconic Auctioneers has always put on an entertaining auction at the end-of-season NEC Classic Motor Show, and this year’s catalogue is filled with interesting consignments. No fewer than five Ferraris feature, including a 1980 Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 directly from the personal car collection of Chris Rea.

Rea is well-known for his passion for Ferraris with many finding their way through his hands over the years, however, one particular model has been a constant within his stable, that being the Dino GT4 appearing in many guises, from out and out race versions which have been spiritedly campaigned by him over the years through to superb road-going examples such as this particular steed, the latest to have received the Rea touch.

Fully recommissioned and beautifully presented, this stylish 308 GT4 is on offer directly from Chris Rea’s Private Collection with an estimate of £40,000-50,000. Purchased some years ago in need of a little TLC, the decision was taken to entrust Ferrari specialists QV of London to fully recommission it.

Other Ferrari highlights include this low-mileage 430 Scuderia in one of the most common (and attractive)£165,000 – £185,000 colour combinations – Rosso Corsa with a factory-fitted stripe over a classic Ferrari black leather interior. UK-supplied with 19,652 miles from new, it is fresh to market after 12 years of private ownership and is estimated to make £165,000-185,000.

Also finished in Rosso Corsa is a 1978 Ferrari 512 BB – one of only 101 right-hand drive models supplied new to the UK. Supplied by H.R.Owen in 1978 to a Doctor in London with a then list price of £27,750. Residing with the present owner for some four years, during which time a timetable of required works have been completed bringing the Ferrari up to its present very high level of finish. The work was entrusted to Simon Campbell and included every aspect of the car.

Work included bodywork and interior refresh, front and rear suspension, drive shafts, steering, brakes, ancillaries, carbs, clutch, gearbox, electrics, wheels and tyres and most importantly, a comprehensive engine rebuild. Prior to the restoration, the kph speedometer which was reading 40,949km was removed and the original mph speedometer was refitted and still reading 29,925 miles as per when it was removed by DK Engineering in 1994. Total mileage is therefore 29,925 miles plus 40,949km (25,593 miles) equalling 55,518 miles.

One final Ferrari highlight is the right-hand drive 2001 360 Modena. Fitted with the desirable manual gearbox it looks particularly special in Argento Nürburgring with a rare Bordeaux and Black leather interior.

The indicated mileage of 31,484 is supported by a full-service record detailing a major service conducted just over a thousand miles ago which included cam belts, air-conditioning belt and water pump. It is still fitted with the OE equipment Becker Ferrari radio with the original instruction leaflet and comes with a ‘Challenge’ rear grille, full electric seats and the ‘specified from new’ factory Wing Shields. It was later treated to a Nouvalari sports silencer.
