Gerry McGovern reportedly departs JLR

Words: Matthew Hayward

Gerry McGovern, Jaguar Land Rover’s chief creative officer, is reported to have departed the company in what Autocar India describes as a sudden and enforced exit, with sources claiming he was ‘escorted out of the office’. The departure comes shortly after PB Balaji succeeded Adrian Mardell as CEO on 17 November.

His exit from Jaguar Land Rover marks one of the most significant shifts in the company’s recent history. According to Autocar India, McGovern’s influence had waned after the somewhat controversial Panthera rebrand of Jaguar, a strategy that aims to completely reinvent the brand, aiming at a considerably more premium end of the market with a new luxury EV. The loss of long-standing support from the late Ratan Tata apparently further weakened McGovern’s position within the Tata-owned group.

Born in Coventry in 1956, McGovern was mentored early by Chrysler design chief Roy Axe, who sponsored his studies at Lanchester Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. His early career included roles at Chrysler in Coventry and Detroit, followed by work with Peter Horbury and Moray Callum at Chrysler/Peugeot. He later joined Austin Rover, contributing to the MG EX-E and leading design on the MGF and Freelander.

Eventually heading Lincoln-Mercury design in the United States, McGovern returned to the UK in 2004 to lead Land Rover’s design direction. Appointed chief creative officer and a board member in 2020, he established the reductive, architectural design language that now defines Range Rover, Defender and Discovery, and positioned Range Rover as a standalone luxury marque under JLR’s Reimagine plan.

His exit comes as JLR advances development of the Jaguar Type 00 – the first model of Jaguar’s all-electric reboot and intended to define its new ultra-luxury design direction.
