Pininfarina celebrates 95th Birthday in Turin

Words: Matthew Hayward

A landmark tribute to 95 years of Pininfarina design was held this month at the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile in Turin. Titled From Myth to Future, the evening event brought together leading figures from government, industry and culture to honour one of Italy’s most storied design houses.

Central to the occasion was a conversation between journalist Maria Latella and Pininfarina CEO Silvio Angori, who reflected on the company’s evolution from a specialist coachbuilder to a global creative studio. Angori described the brand today as ‘a creative laboratory’, spanning sectors from mobility to architecture and product design, while reaffirming its commitment to sustainability.

The evening’s panel discussion, also titled From Myth to Future, gathered representatives from across disciplines. The event also marked the launch of Pininfarina 95 – Timeless Beauty, a new book published by Giorgio Nada Editore, as well as a preview of Story of a Legend, a forthcoming documentary directed by Flavia Triggiani and Marina Loi – which charts the firm’s history through voices such as Piero Ferrari, the Giugiaro family and Giorgia Pininfarina.

Flavia Triggiani, Director and Producer, commented: ‘This documentary tells a legendary story – how a small coachbuilding workshop became world-renowned for extraordinary design. A generational tale, passing passion and knowledge from founder Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina to his son Sergio, and then to his grandchildren Andrea and Paolo. It mirrors Italy’s postwar history, the economic boom, crises, revivals, and the digital transformation of the 21st century.’

The accompanying exhibition, staged in the museum’s main hall, offered a curated snapshot of Pininfarina’s enduring design ethos. Among the highlights was the 1984 Honda HP-X, a low-slung aerodynamic study developed in collaboration with Honda, and the Sintesi, a forward-thinking 2008 concept exploring the future of mobility. More recent creations included the 2uettottanta, a 2010 reinterpretation of the classic Alfa Romeo roadster, and the Ferrari-based Sergio barchetta, unveiled in 2013 as a tribute to Sergio Pininfarina. Making its official Italian debut was the hand-crafted Morgan Midsummer, while the Automobili Pininfarina Battista appeared in a special anniversary livery

The event continues a year of celebrations for Pininfarina, following its Milan Design Week appearance and ahead of a special concours award at Pebble Beach in August. For more info, see pininfarina.it.
