Kyle Busch, one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history, died on Thursday 21 May 2026 after being hospitalised with a severe illness earlier that day. He was 41. No cause of death was disclosed, though at his most recent race at Watkins Glen on 10 May, Fox Sports reported he was suffering with a sinus cold.

Busch won two Cup Series titles – in 2015 and 2019 – and 63 races at the top level, ninth on the all-time list. He also amassed 102 victories in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and 69 in the Craftsman Truck Series, more than any driver in the history of either series. He was the younger brother of Kurt Busch, a NASCAR Hall of Famer.

‘Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch,’ his family, Richard Childress Racing and NASCAR said in a joint statement. ‘A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent… NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon.’

‘Kyle was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. No one can deny that,’ said Dale Earnhardt Jr, son of the sport’s most iconic champion and a rival-turned-friend of Busch’s. ‘But he was also a father, a husband, son and friend to many. My heart is broken for the Busch family.’

Busch had been due to race in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway this Sunday. He is survived by his wife Samantha, whom he married in 2010, and their two children, Brexton and Lennix.
