Pendine Sands Hot Rod Races
The Pendine Sands Hot Rod Races are a real tribute to the spirit of speed. Pendine has of course played host to numerous land speed record attempts in the past, and while the hot rods that turn out each year don’t quite hit 170mph like the cars of the 1920s, 100mph isn’t unusual on the sand, and this really is old-school racing at its finest, and its most stylish; each car is waved off by a flag lady in appropriately retro attire. The races are now in their thirteenth year (this year’s event is held on the 12th and 13th of September, with five or six hours of racing each day between the tides) and it’s entirely free for spectators, though bear in mind that due to the nature of the racing, there’s not much access to the cars themselves until racing has concluded at the end of each day.
