Ferrari brings back the gated manual shifter with limited-run 12Cilindri Manuale

Words: Matthew Hayward

Ferrari has unveiled the 12Cilindri Manuale, a limited-edition version of its front-engined V12 grand tourer that marks the return of a gated manual shifter to the marque’s road-car line-up. Limited to 1499 examples, the new model combines Ferrari’s naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 with an innovative ‘Manuale By-Wire’ transmission system designed to recreate the tactile experience of a traditional gated manual while retaining the underlying architecture of the firm’s eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The move represents Ferrari’s first manual production model since the Californian-market 599 GTB manual and acknowledges growing enthusiasm among collectors for analogue driving experiences. Rather than reverting to a conventional six- or seven-speed manual ‘boxes, Ferrari has developed an entirely new electronic system centred on a traditional gear lever and clutch pedal. The gear selector replicates the weight and metallic click of earlier Ferrari manuals, while the clutch pedal uses a by-wire system engineered to mimic the progressive feel of a mechanical clutch, even allowing mistimed shifts or engine stalls if the driver’s inputs are incorrect.

Power continues to come from Ferrari’s naturally aspirated 6496cc V12, producing 818bhp at 9250rpm and revving to 9500rpm. Performance remains largely unchanged, with 0-62mph taking 2.9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 211mph. Ferrari says the V12’s linear power delivery and willingness to rev make it the ideal partner for a manual transmission, encouraging drivers to explore the engine’s full operating range rather than relying on rapid paddle shifts.

The cabin receives a redesigned centre console inspired by Ferrari’s classic open-gated manuals, complete with a polished aluminium gear knob and a modern interpretation of the iconic shift gate. Paddle shifters have been deleted entirely, placing the emphasis squarely on the interaction between steering wheel, pedals and gear lever.

Externally, the Manuale is distinguished by bespoke Tailor Made finishes, exclusive forged wheels and subtle styling details, while the launch car is finished in Rosso Rubino. Buyers will also be able to specify a dedicated livery inspired by the six-speed gearbox and choose from 25 historic Ferrari colours.

While the Manuale By-Wire concept is undoubtedly unconventional, Ferrari’s decision to reintroduce three pedals to one of its flagship V12 models reflects a growing appreciation for driver involvement over outright speed – especially in an era when it’s harder than ever to enjoy high performance cars on the road. The real question is of course, just how good can this ‘synthetic’ manual transmission be? We can’t wait to find out…
