Frank Stephenson to speak at Concours des Légendes

Words: Matthew Hayward

Frank Stephenson, one of the most influential automotive designers of the past three decades, has been confirmed as a guest speaker at this year’s Wilton House Concours des Légendes. His appearance adds a modern design perspective to an already packed itinerary that celebrates the people, cars and stories that have shaped motoring history.

Stephenson’s career has spanned some of the industry’s most significant manufacturers, and few designers can claim responsibility for as many recognisable production cars. From revitalising historic nameplates to shaping modern supercars, his work has left a lasting mark on the automotive landscape.

After beginning his career at Ford, Stephenson joined BMW, where he became closely involved with the rebirth of the Mini. It established a design philosophy that would become a hallmark of Stephenson’s work – respecting heritage while embracing contemporary engineering and safety requirements.

His influence extended further during his time overseeing design at Ferrari and Maserati. There he contributed to a number of important models, including the Ferrari F430 and track-focused FXX, while also helping shape the Maserati GranTurismo, GranSport and MC12. The latter remains one of the defining road-going homologation specials of the early 21st century and played a key role in Maserati’s return to international GT racing.

Stephenson later moved to Fiat, where he helped bring the modern Fiat 500 into production. Like the Mini before it, the car successfully blended retro-inspired styling with modern usability, becoming a major commercial success and demonstrating the enduring appeal of heritage-led design.

More recently, Stephenson played a pivotal role in establishing the visual identity of the reborn McLaren Automotive. As Design Director, he oversaw the styling of the MP4-12C and later the McLaren P1, the latter widely regarded as one of the landmark hypercars of its generation.

Stephenson joins a growing roster of guests at this year’s Wilton House Concours des Légendes, including Le Mans winner Richard Attwood, Formula 1 and Le Mans racer Stefan Johansson and legendary Lamborghini test driver Valentino Balboni. Together, they will offer visitors a rare opportunity to hear first-hand accounts.

Wilton House Concours des Légendes takes place on 19-21 June 2026. Tickets are available now, see concoursdeslegendes.co.uk for more info.
