North Carolina-based custom car builder Retro Designs has unveiled a fully reimagined 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE that pairs classic 1960s elegance with modern performance. Built to mark Retro Designs’ 15th anniversary, the car is powered by a 5.4-litre AMG M113 V8 producing 640bhp – four times the 280SE’s original 160bhp output.

The new engine – which replaces the car’s period-correct 2.8-litre straight-six – delivers its power to the rear wheels via a 722.6 5G-Tronic five-speed automatic transmission. To accommodate the upgraded powertrain, Retro Designs fitted a custom wiring harness, motorsport-grade electrical system, and aftermarket ECU. Cooling is handled by a bespoke aluminium radiator, while a Kooks stainless steel exhaust refines the V8 soundtrack.

Complementing the drivetrain is a fully reworked suspension system and modern Brembo brakes. The suspension gives the car a lower, more purposeful stance, while the brakes sit behind bespoke Evod Industries billet wheels with floating hubcaps inspired by the stock steel wheels.

The Irish Green exterior is paired with a tan leather interior, thoughtfully blending modern conveniences such as Dakota Digital gauges, Vintage Air climate control, accent lighting, heated seats, and a contemporary audio system featuring an Audison amplifier and Focal speakers.

Described as a “no-compromise” build, the 280SE reportedly took Retro Designs’ technicians thousands of hours to refine and complete. The firm’s previous projects have included Toyota Land Cruisers, Ford Ranger Broncos and Chevrolet Corvettes.
