One of the two Ford Probe IV concept cars is being offered for sale on US online auction platform Bring a Trailer. Still based near Houston, Texas, the car briefly surfaced on Facebook Marketplace in 2025, where it is said to have sold for $11,111. The Bring a Trailer listing runs until March 22, 2026.

This particular example (chassis 001) was built as part of Ford’s aerodynamic research programme with Ghia. Used for wind-tunnel testing, it was never fitted with an engine. Its role as a static prototype is evident in the wooden frame supporting the bodywork and its unconnected steering. Chassis 002, meanwhile, was completed as a running prototype and is now housed at California’s Petersen Automotive Museum.

Ford developed a series of Probe concepts throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s to explore ways of improving efficiency in the wake of the 1970s oil crises. The Probe IV was among the most advanced iterations, achieving a remarkable level of aerodynamic efficiency thanks to wheel shrouds, covered headlights, concealed windscreen wipers, adjustable ride height and a clean, cooling-opening-free nose. The result was a drag coefficient of just 0.15Cd – lower even than the similarly radical Volkswagen XL1.

According to the listing, chassis 001 was displayed at the Gullo Ford dealership in Conroe for several years before being placed into long-term storage. Its fibreglass bodywork is said to have been resurfaced prior to its acquisition by the consignor in 2024, although the car will require extensive work to return it to its original condition.
