Nürburgring record-holders SPS Motorsport to bring TÜV-approved Rocketeer MX-5 to Europe

Rocketeer, the UK company best known for swapping V6 engines into Mazda MX-5s, has appointed SPS Motorsport GmbH of Altendiez, Germany as its approved European installer.

The announcement – which follows the appointment of Rocketeer installers in the US and Australia – brings TÜV approval to the conversion for the first time. This makes Rocketeer models instantly registrable in Germany and Austria, while providing a strong basis for approval in other EU countries.

The partnership was confirmed by Rocketeer founder Bruce Southey and SPS Motorsport managing director Jan Spies at the company’s annual Spring Opener event on 18 April in front of more than 800 Mazda MX-5 owners. Founded in 2012, SPS Motorsport is well-known in MX-5 circles and built an NB-generation car that set a record-breaking 7:29 lap at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

SPS Motorsport will offer Rocketeer’s 3.0-litre V6 conversion for the NA, NB and NC-generation models, as well as self-build kits for NA and NB cars. It will also take commissions for full RestoMod builds for European customers.

‘The Rocketeer V6 conversion has always represented one of the most exciting and characterful transformations available for the platform,’ said Jan Spies. ‘Becoming an official Rocketeer partner is a milestone for us – it allows us to offer our customers a factory-supported TÜV-approved V6 solution with the engineering quality both brands stand for.’

This latest expansion to Rocketeer’s global installer network is a testament to the popularity of its offerings and, after Octane’s Matthew Hayward drove a turnkey Mk1 RestMod in issue 271, it isn’t difficult to see why. Read his test drive feature here.
