A 1992 Audi S4 GTO raced by two-time Le Mans winner Hans-Joachim Stuck in South Africa’s WesBank Modified Saloon Car Championship is set to be auctioned in a Collecting Cars Sealed Bids sale. The auction date has not been made public.
Chassis 001, the first of just two S4 GTOs built, secured two victories in Stuck’s hands on its debut outing in Cape Town in 1992. The Audi was subsequently campaigned by South African touring car driver Christopher Aberdein in 1993, helping the marque secure that year’s WesBank Modified Saloon Car Championship title. Aberdein raced it for a further full season in ’94.

The S4 GTO was conceived as a silhouette racer to support the launch of the Audi S4 road car in South Africa. Beneath its composite bodywork sits a 2.2-litre, 720bhp five-cylinder engine and six-speed transmission from an Audi 90 IMSA GTO, paired with DTM-spec running gear. Chassis 001 is understood to be the only S4 GTO to retain its original IMSA-style wide-body bodywork and rollcage.
Eagle-eyed readers will notice the car no longer wears the red-and-silver Audi livery in which it debuted with Stuck in 1992. From its second race onwards, it carried the Rothmans colours it retains today.

After retiring from period competition at the end of the ’94 season, chassis 001 was sold to Ashley Landman of Ashley’s Fine Cars in Cape Town. Landman displayed the car in his showroom and occasionally raced it in regional modified super saloon events at Killarney.
Chassis 001 later made its way to the US after being sold to California-based Audi race car collector Steve Slotkin. In 2016, it was acquired by its current UK-based owner, John Hanlon.
Following its arrival in the UK, the S4 GTO was subjected to a full rebuild. It was reunited with Stuck at the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb in 2016 and has since made appearances at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Chassis 001 is accompanied by period Audi Sport documentation and myriad spares. A pre-sale estimate has not been disclosed.
