‘F1-inspired’ Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed launched in Abu Dhabi

Although the Mercedes-Benz SL has morphed considerably from the road-racer it was born as in 1954, the new SL-based limited-run Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed model aims to take the SL back to its motorsport roots. This two-seat, roofless (and windscreenless) sports car combines motorsport-inspired engineering and design. Limited to just 250 units, the PureSpeed is a clear nod to the brand’s racing heritage, just as it did with the SLR 722 Edition.

Unveiled at the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, this will be the first model in the Mythos series. The car’s exterior is defined by its low silhouette, long bonnet, and aggressive shark-nose front end, drawing design cues from the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar. It also features carbon fibre detailing and bespoke aerodynamic components, such as a retractable rear spoiler and transparent deflectors. The 21-inch forged wheels new, and are finished with carbon fibre covers to reduce drag.

Power comes from AMG’s 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, producing 585 PS and 800 Nm of torque. Paired with AMG’s ‘Speedshift’ nine-speed automatic transmission and the fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system of the regular SL63. Acceleration is rapid, with 0-62mph coming up in 3.6 seconds, and top speed a claimed 195mph. Advanced aerodynamic features, including an extendable front splitter and active rear-wing combines with rear-wheel steering to aid stability at high speeds.

The PureSpeed gets AMG Performance seats ‘inside’, with upholstered in a two-tone crystal white and black leather scheme. A custom IWC Schaffhausen clock adorns the dashboard, continuing AMG’s tradition of pairing luxury with performance. A Burmester High-End 3D Surround Sound System, alongside bespoke helmets with integrated communication systems, to ensure some level of civility inside the cabin at speed.

Safety is a key focus, with the HALO system adapted from Formula 1 to protect occupants. The tubular steel structure incorporates roll bars and LED ambient lighting, combining functionality with a futuristic aesthetic.

Limited to 250 examples, the Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed – along with the future Mythos series cars – aims to highlight AMG’s technical ability as well as honouring its motorsport roots.
