Get under the skin of Bugatti at new Griffin Museum of Science and Industry X-ray exhibit

Words: Elliott Hughes | Photography: Andrei Duman

Enthusiasts have the opportunity to see historic Bugattis from a whole new perspective in a new exhibition at The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, US.

Beyond the Surface: The Art of X-rays pairs striking X-ray imagery of pre-war Bugattis with exquisitely detailed, handcrafted 1:8-scale replicas from the Amalgam Collection.

The line-up includes several of the marque’s most iconic machines, from the 1926 Targa-Florio-winning Type 35 and the curvaceous Type 57SC Atlantic to the 1937 Type 57G “Tank”, through to the modern Chiron hypercar.

The automotive display sits within a broader survey of X-ray technology, tracing its evolution from the late 19th century to today. Much of the exhibition – including the Bugatti imagery – features X-ray photography by Andrei Duman, capturing familiar, intriguing and historically important objects.

Highlights include the original M4 Enigma machine recovered from the U-505 U-boat, a souvenir box camera from Chicago’s 1933 Century of Progress World’s Fair, Thomas Edison lightbulbs dating to 1893, and everyday items such as game-console controllers, toys and telephones.

Visitors can also test their familiarity with the objects via an interactive game that challenges them to identify ostensibly familiar items by their X-ray images.

‘We are delighted to see our Bugatti models showcased in such an innovative setting,’ commented Amalgam Collection founder Sandy Copeman. ‘Andre’s fascination with X-ray photography resonated with us, and his work reveals a new dimension of the artistry and engineering within these cars.’
